The weather was (bright and cool, and the wicket was fast when the match 'between Australia and Surrey was resumed. The attendance was j small. Matthews partnered Macartney. The latter reached the century in 175 minutes, and a, total of 200 was scored in 180 minutes. Matthews, principally by good offdriving had reached 58 when he was caught at long-off by Bird off Hayes.— . Six for 226. Macartney was clean bowled in the same over when attempting to drive Hayes. He had batted 195 minutes and hit eighteen fourers. His innings was ' chance'ess. Emery and Hazlitt were then associated. Hazlitt got his leg before to Rushby.—B—s—23B. Carkeek had scored 4 when he was bowled'by Rushby. Emery and WJiitty added 36 for the last wicket, and then the latter was easily caught at cover by Hobbs off Rushby. Emery (37 not out) made his runs in hits usual vigorous style. SURREY AT THE WICKETS. Hayward and Hobbs opened Surrey's second innings, to the bowling of Whitty and Emery. been carried to 105 when ho lifted Hazlitt to Whitty at long-on. Hobbs, who was batting splendidly, at 81 was caught by McLaren, who was playing substitute for Jennings, and who brought off a magnificent catch at long-on, off Hazlitt. Hobbs hit a sixer and 12 fourers.
