THE GAMING ACT
CHARGES DISMISSED.
In the Magistrate's Court at Masterton yesterday, Mr Reid gave reserved judgment in: the case in which J.. Johnston., of Masterton, had been charged with publishing a document on behalf of himself as to betting on horse races, and also having such a document printed.
His Worship .said that he had gone carefully into the whole matter, and the cases cited. There was not, in his opinion-, sufficient evidence to connect Johnston with the publication. In .regard io the priniHing of the document the evidence fc-r It-lie prosecution was also weak. Thero Avas no evidence as to who the cards had been- printed for. .One could only guess, but this was not fciufScient where a defendant is liable to a heavy penalty. In the circumstances lie would dismiss both charges.
