The weather was dull and the- attendance small -when the match between Australia and Essex was resumed. The Australians declared their innings closed for 564. Douglas and Fane opened to the bowling of "Whitby and Emery. Douglas gave a chance to Kelleway in the slips off Emery before scoring. Play was slow, 50 runs taking ■ 75 minutes. Fane was off-driving well. He was nearly caught at 10 by Matthews at j-Jhort-kg. Douglas was watchful. Tho century took 118 minutes. There- were frequent changes of bowling. Fane, at CI, was smartly caught on the leg hide of the wickets by Carkeek off Matthews.—l for 114. Douglas, at 53, played -forward to WJiitty and was ibowled. He had .batted 160 minutes. Pcrrin, playing forward to a good ball from Emery, was bowled.—3 for 160. Gil'lingham was cleverly taken by | Carkeek off Whitty, and was quickly ' followed by McGahey, Emery throwing down the latter's wicket. —5 for 172. Freeman was "yorked" iby Emery, when lie had scored six. Carpenter, after a faulty 19, during which ihe gave two chances, was caught by Kelleway off Hazlitt. The batsman was dissatisfied with the decision.—7 for 230. Russell was playing confidently, i The last three wickets added 10, Mat- j thews bowling and catching Gibson for 5, and Hazlitt clean 'bowling Buck-enlia-m and Mead for 5 and u respectively.
