Mr L. G. JReid, S.M., was acting only temporarily as relieving Magistrate to Dr. McArtluir at the Upper Hutfc thi-a week. ■ Mr Joseph Franklin was returned as Councillor of the Borough of Wo. dville at the Municipal election held there yesterday. Mr Franklin defeat-' ed his opponent, Mr Ernest Giles, by 106 votes. The vacancy was causal through Councillor James Grant being: elected .Mayor.—Press Association. The friends of Mrs Smyth, of Carterton, who leaves next week to jo - u Dr. Smyth, who'has takeh up practice near Oamaru, entertained her at an "At Home" at Mrs J. T. M. Hornsby's residence yesterday afternoon,, and presented her with a beautiful silver bowl and gold pendant, as tokens of their esteem. There was a large attendance, and a very sociable time spent. '■' Sir-Robert Stout has been re-elected-the representative of Victoria Collegeon tho University Senate.' Sir Joseph Ward has cabled to Invercargill that Tuesday, June 4th, will' suit his convenience to attend the pro-, posed banquet which the residents arranging in his honour. ; . i
The Hon.H. G. Ell, PostmasterGeneral, has been visiting the Nelson district during the- last two days, and" received deputations on Departmental mutters at Nelson and Richmond. Heis accompanied by Mr D. Kohi'rtson, Secretary of" Post Offices, and leavesfor Blenheim this morning.
