Mr L. G. JReid, S.M., was acting only temporarily as relieving Magistrate to Dr. McArtluir at the Upper Hutfc thi-a week. ■ Mr Joseph Franklin was returned as Councillor of the Borough of Wo. dville at the Municipal election held there yesterday. Mr Franklin defeat-' ed his opponent, Mr Ernest Giles, by 106 votes. The vacancy was causal through Councillor James Grant being: elected .Mayor.—Press Association. The friends of Mrs Smyth, of Carterton, who leaves next week to jo - u Dr. Smyth, who'has takeh up practice near Oamaru, entertained her at an "At Home" at Mrs J. T. M. Hornsby's residence yesterday afternoon,, and presented her with a beautiful silver bowl and gold pendant, as tokens of their esteem. There was a large attendance, and a very sociable time spent.
