SECOND READING OF THE BILL MIXI ST ER IA LISTS SECRET F,LY ASHAMED. LABOUR PARTY SUPPORTS THE MEASURE. (Received Last Night, 8.40 o'clock.) LONDON, May 14. Tn the House of Commons, during the debate on the second reading of the Welsh Disestablishment Bill, Mr Smith moved for its .rejection, and declared that there were hardily any Ministerialists who were not secretly ashamed of the proposals. Such support as was gained was duo to an appeal to cupidity. Mr Ellie Griffith, member for Anglesey, said that the Welsh Liberals demanded that the church should enjoy the same rights and liberties a.s others. ' Disestablishment would en-a-ble the church to retain control over thfl ritual.
Mr Kiei* Hardie said that the Lahour Party approved of the Bill because it would supply a precedent for the abolition of private ownership of land.
The Timer; states that the small public) interest shown in the' Homo Rule a;nd ■Disestablishment debates is one of tho inevitable results of the Par M-am-mfc Aot. The knowledge that the Lords will .reject both and that the real conflict will ho deferred for two yearn deadens the discussion.
