CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING. The t3n;T]ty-€i:xt'li annual meeting of the memibere of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was 'held in the Dominion Hall on Saturday afternoon last. There was a good attendance of members, and M.r Alex. McLead (President) o.?upied the chair. Mr Adex. Donald, District Chief Secretary, .of the St. John Amhulaait'2 Brigade, wrote thanking the Society for ,thc assistance given by the Pipe Band in rendering a programme of music outside the Dominion Hall on Am!bulanoe Saturday. The- acting .secretary of the Kopuaranga Sports Ctob wrote forwarding £lO for the services rendered 'by the I Pipe Band at tibem- lecent sports, I and aß'kiuig uf the Club could see its 1 way to make a rebate on the amount, as'owing to adverse''-circumstances a loss had teeii: maate. On ittti-e- motion of Mr J. H. Paulin.g t the application was referred to the Pipe Band Comm.i'tee. ; The secretary of file United Ancient Order df Druids, Carterton, wrote, thanking tine Society for the assistance given by ah© Pipe Band at the Fisher concert. •
The Master.ton Competitions Society /wrote ackfng for a further donation .for this year's- competitions. It was decided to vote £2 for best Scotch song [by male and the best Scotch song by femwl'e, making a total donation of £4.
Mir R. W. Rohson wrote tendering his resignation as a member of the Society, and enclosing a subscription of £1 towards the funds of the Pipe Bland.
A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Robsom for bis generous donation.
On the motion of Mir R. Meßae, it wasi decided that a Cihief of the S'oj cfety be appointed, and that the imI meditate -past president ; be appointed I for tlhe ensuing year.
In connection with.' the above, the meeting resolved, on itihe motion of Mr' T. G. Hoar, that a; committee consisting of Mr R, Mcßae, W. Sellar, D. MeLachlan, E. H. Waddington, and the President be appointed to select a suitalble badge for the' position.
In formally moving the adoption of ] the report and balance sheet (already . published- in these columns), Mr McLeod isJaid that it gave members a very clear idea of the work of the institution during the past'twelve months, wihMi was most .satisfactory. Many important events had marked the, pa-ogress of the 1 'Society in this period, notaiblly the great success of the Pipe Band and tlie- Inglosideis, and there was every prospect of the winter gatherings proving still more successful; this- year. Thle sports had proved a great success,, and tilie lengthy programme of events was carried through without tb& • slightest hitch. : Hi;S duties during the year had be'en a pleasure, and tin itliis cccinieiotbn he wished to take the opportunity of thanking the officers of ,tihe Society for the valuable 'assistance extended to him during his term of office. Mir .Gecrgjeson seconded the motion, and tire report and (balance sheet were adopted.
• Mr MeLeod, in announcing that the officers cf the Society had been elected 1 unopposed, said that it gave him greatt pleasure to" hand the chair over to Mr J. H. Pauling, the Society's new President., who was full cf energy and enthusiasm, and ever had in view the beaElntarests of (the institution.
Mr Pauling then took his seat at th© taible, amidst applause. He expressed liiis thanks to members for placing ham once again, in the position of President. Mr MoLeo'd had occupied tHie positions with great success, and he (the speaker) would endeavour to follow the example and policy of his predecessor. He paid a tribute to the efforts of the secretary (Mr W. Gililespie), who he salid had worked with! untiring energy to strengthen the! position of the Society. The grea,t increase ini the blerslhap was chiefly, due to the enthusiasm of their secretary, and he (tlhe speaker) had seen as many as forty new menniber selected' at a meeting in one batch. While Ihe was very proud to be BresEl'ent of the Sooiety, he was of opinion that the honour was one that should go round. In the new Vice-Presidents (Messrs T. G. Hoar and J. Georgeson) he had two colfeagues who .understood their work> and would give him. valuable assistance.
•Mr Gillespie, wlio spoke in appreciation) of the retiring President, who had made Himself conversant wdth every de/tail of tlhe work of the Society, said-it also gave him great pleasure to refer to the sterling work of the retiring vice-president (Mr J. B. McKenuzie), who had'been a tower of strength during the year. The two new vice-president© were gentlemen I who were thoroughly acquainted with 10te work of the Sooiefty.

The President and Yice-Prosidlents were •appointed to arrange for the opening of itQie iinst series of Inglesides.
