The Australian cricketers commenced the second match of their tour to-day, their '.opponents being Northamptonshire,

Tho Nortlhants team is G. A. TVdals, S. G. Smith, J. Denton, W. Denton, G. J. Thompson, W. East, W. Wells, W. A. Buswell, F. E. Woolley, J. Seymour, and R. Haywood. D. Smith, W, 5. Whitty, H. Webster, and G. IL Hiazlitt were omitted from tho Australian team.

Hie weather is hot and the wicket is good. The attendance is only moderate.

Austrailia batted first, Gregory and Bardsley-opening the play. Bardsley played on to Smith, to whom he had never been comfortable. Gregory had scored 32 in. 45 minutes.

Macartney 'partnered Gregory, and a fine stand ensued. Gregory readied 50 in 70 minutes, the total reaching 100 in 75 minutes. When Gregory was 53 ho was missed from consecutive halls from Smith, giving chances to Vials in the slips and Thompson at short-leg. He was .also beaten twice in the same o'ver, and >at 57 gave a difficult chance to Buswell, who was landing back to Weills. Gregory, after passing 50, was often in trouble in his timing. Macartney was playing free and attractive cricket. At lunch the total was 148.

After lunch the attendance rose to 2000. Macartney reached 50 in 75 minutes, with the total at 208. Gregory attained his century after 114 minutes play. Ha was good oil the offside.
