AKITIO COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. Last Saturday the Akitio County Council adjounned its mee-CTrg from 11 ;i.nn. uintii 1 p..m. as a mark of sympathy ait the demise ol" the County Chairman's father, Mr R. B. Robertuon seii;'.'. The special meeting which was,convened for the purpose of further considering die lengthy .by-laws the Council propose adopting, was held over until' the 18th May, when a special meeting will be held to deal with the foWbwing matters: — By-laws, .estimates, striking the general rate, and for the purpose of declaring by special order the Glonora Road, a main road. Or J. W. Murray was elected as acting chair man, and there were present Os E'llinghanv, Fcrrk.-k, Dickons and Smith. Tim County Chairman, Mr iR. "B. 'Robertson jimii"'., also Cr W. A. (Buii'ling, .were absent.
'Jiivo .tenders were received in connection; with fihe Waiowaka Bridge approach— P. C:ftor £163 12s 3d, and Messrs Cihilds and Valois £l6l Hi is Bd., .The . lowest tender was accepted.
'The District Engineer wrote in reference to 'the obtainng of reports of foundations in connection with the Akitio River Waiotiaki and Waterloo bridge,?. The Clerk was instructed to urge the Department to forward plans of the •bridges on Glenftra". ltoad at ,Aki€o, also the smaller (bridges which are to be subsidised by t'be Government.
, The Pirj'.i'icvWcrte Department also 'stated that there w,as no money available for .the Makoaira Road. Am invitation was received from the secretary of the Wairarapa District Hospital Board re appointing delegates •re Local Government Bill.
The Council was of opinion that tihe appointment of two delegates to repiresenlfc the Wairarapa district could be arranged (without'-further expense of isending 'two delegates) by the repres>enitaitives cf >Ma.startto-u and Pahiatua.. and in. consequence only one delegate ■was appointed, viz,..the County chairman. -.
The offer cf Mr James Norton to rant one halif of the. Tow,a-i 'Road Reserve at "A 'pepper-corn, rent was accepted.' ' !
The ranger's report stated tb.it be pound required repairing, and that bebad given all 'ratepayers notice that (lie bad re-commenced ranging for the winter season.
Mr B. Leathwiek, contractor at Green's Hall, Ai.frcdton-Wcber road iPongaroa to Dannevirke, stated l ' nr the metal pit had run out, and that lie desired to tewnlinate his contra j; and deposit about 301) cubic yards of metal on the roadside.
The Council agreed to the propo* al., Wages and accounts, amounting in £1986 Os 2d', were passed ror -pay iment. Aerial Irani and Plant.— The Atrial Tram and Crushing Plant is at present being placed in position by a I fuM sitaff of men ,aud dxou'd be in.' •working order within three weeks. Aohanga Valley Road.— The '■<?* formation and repairs' to the Aohanga Valley Road havebeen effected, i-nd the road is now nil good order. iSugar Loaf Road Grant.— I hive practically terminated the Loaf .Road 'formation for the time being, as the culvert timber is not yet at baud, and the formation (.annex be completed until .the culverts are inserted. One man is. still' employed ic protect the road against wash-o'tls. etc. The contractor for haulage of (timber informs me that he '?. having (difficulty to procure a bullock team to baul the euiveiit timber from the M.-u ■ ainatiga to tlie iSugar Loaf Roads. Longford Bridge.—The construct! >. of Longford bridge is progressing satisfactorily, and should be •.•omn'eteil within two weeks, weather pcrtiitting. The (approaches to same are rd>\ >! being made: Waiowajta Bridge.— The AVaio-vat.i Bridge has been .completed satisfactorily, and. tenders have been invit'-l ifor' the form.atir.li of approaches to •same. Waioakura Grant,— The Waioakcirt road formation contract is progress -i.i£ 'favourably, .and should be complied ! very soon. Tihe platform, bridge has been constructed on this road .and "the culverts will be inserted at once. Itimu Road, MetaV Contracts: Contract 176 lias been completed satisfactorily, and Contract No. 177 ( has been ire-let'to Messrs Gadsby and Ba.-J.n+. and the stripping of metal has been oomimenced.'
Pongaroa-Makuri Metal:-The :a-.d-age of metal on tihe Pongaroa-M;ik"n .Toadbas been delayed owing to the wet 'weather, but lias been again .coiivmenc--0cl" *&* The old metal at the junctioji cf ihe. Waihi Road has been, picked up >.ind ire'-aiapped, and a continuous coat of metal is being laid on. top. Miin-utara vßlcad Metal: The jock is being quarried on the Manuharr. Road, and tihe.necessary repairs \\ ill be effected at once.
Lagoon Bridge.— ■? The, repairs to Lagoon bridge will be commenced at once.
llakaunui -filling.— Sufficient stone Bias been obtained from Newtvmb «. creek to metal' the Bakaunui riiJiig, and this work will be done as scon a» possible. • ' '. ' 'Mt. Arurar Road.— The abovo road is in a very backward slate, ami J. would recommend that three men with a horse and scoop be employed to reform the road throughout.
Foo'tpa'Sris.—The Pongaroa town ship footpaths have been completed as purposed.
