MATCH AGAINST NOTTS

A GOOD OPENING

The weather was warm and cloudy for the opening match of the Austrafians, against Notts, and. the attendance was small. The pitch was soft, but drying. G. M. Lee was omitted from the Notts eleven, and C.'Kelleway, S. H. Emery, H. Webster and D. Smith from tho Australians.

A. 0. Jones, the Notts captain, won the toss, and sent tho visitors to the wickets. Wass and Riley opened the attack. , , The first ball yielded four bves. The first wicket fell at 28, Bardsley -being dismissed by :a- brilliant one-handed catch by Jones >at second slip. Macartney joined Gregory. Tho bowling was of uncertain length, and the batsmen seized favourable chances. Macartney played the "off-theory' bowling skilfully, but it was some time before the bowlers found their length. At 36 Gregory got his leg in front to Iremonger. Ho was 70 minutes at the wickets. His timing was unequal. He was missed when 28 by Jones off Wass. Two for 77. Macartney was 24 when VTinnett filled the vacancy. The century appeared in eighty-five- minutes. Macartney reached 50 in 70 minutes. After getting going he played free cricket, his pulling and off-driving being excellent. The partnership was ended by Iremonger smartly catching Minnett at point. He had been 'badly missed, when he was four, at short-leg, by ' Riley off Iremonger. Three for '22. Macartney was now 51. Mayne joined Macartney, and together they carried the score to 135 before lunch. Upon resuming the Sydney man continued'to play admirably till he -hit across Riley, and retired for a stylish 84, without a chance. His innings contained eleven fourers and lasted five minutes under two hours. Four I for 166. From then omthe hatting fell away. Mayne played a dull innings of 19, Matthews a. quiet one of 26, and Whitty hit three fourers off his first over, hut outside Macartney the batting was below expectations. Tho innings lasted 230 minutes. The Notts bowling and fielding was only moderate at the start, but improved later on. The wicket was dry ing and played easily. ' . j Scores: —•

Both put ow pace, and byes went to the 'boundary off each in the first two overs. Jones and G. Gunn were the batsmen, and the former was yorked by Hazlitt at 23. The bowlers then changed ends, and Hardstaff was smartly stumped at 30. The light at this stage was bad. J. iGunn followed, and at 48 McLaren relieved Whitty with the ball. Hazlitt was awkward to play, ,and the fielding was good. G. Gunn, after .taking 70 minutes to compile 22, was bowled in'McLaren's second over in attempting to glance him. Payton, who followed, was immediately caught at point. Four wickets were down for 55, out J. Gunn and Crawford played out time. The latter's 14 was all made in one over from Hazlitt.
