FRENCH SYNDICATE ACTIVE.
IMPROVING PAPEETE HARBOUR
(By Telegraph—Press Association.} , AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Talune brings news that a French syndicate, under the auspices of the French Government, intendsto cany out harbour improvements at Papeete, in yiew of the opening of tho Panama Canal. It is stated that £900,000 will be/ spent irni constructing wharves "and a dry dock (capable of accommodating tlie largest vessels passing through the Canal), and deepening and improving, the approaches to the port. A representative of the Frencii Government was at Papeete making arrangements for labour and a supply of material for the work, which is tobe commenced in three or four months.
