TOURIST TROPHY RACE, 1911

Undoubtedly the neatest test that any motor cycle .has ever "Undergone, and one that included the most varied conditions, was the Tourist Trophy Contest, held on the Isle of Man, England, .in July, 1911. The course was a circuit of 87\ miles, covered five times, ia total of 187 miles. It was over the ordinary roads of the island, (full of turns land"kinks, with a surface much beh>w tl'.e English standard. Bosid-CB numerous ordinary grades-, Snaefelil Mountain, -a. climb of four miles,, with a corresponding descent, was surmounted on each circuit. For this great contest fifty-nine machines entered, the hest that .Europe could produce, and ii.ii -whoso construction many months were consumed; and cf these- only twenty-eight .survived, eloquent evidence of the immense severity of the task. Among the istajrters were five "Indians," and not only did ev.ary one cf the five finish, hut the "Indian" captured the first three places. ISiich ;a performance is unprecedented, and the most wonderful showing ever ltfade hy .any motor cycle. To -ciover this lonsr course without a flatten- -at the tremendous speed necessary for Miecass; to survive the continuous' s'train of rough roads and hard driving without a single me-eh-•ank-al failure; to climb the -milcs_ cf steep mountain roads without a sign of (burning out, are demonstrations of efficiency, endurance and mechanical perfection that have never he en equallied, and will never bo -surpassed. Mr J-. C. E.wingtoiv. of Master-ton, has | secured the Wairara.pa agency cf the "InxYian."
