The statmenit of finances showed adebit 'balance at April 26th of'£3frr 17s lid, against a credit .balance of £6 17© the previous month. The tetal authorisation® were £2475 10s €&, including sites, etc.. The receipts for April and March (since the 'last fcoanft (meeting) were £10,488 Os 9d. Resignations were tendered as $6%~ flow: — Miss V. 'Curtis (Petone)'; Misa M. iNewtoni (Waintji-onmat'a), Miss SL _ > Mr A. Thompson (Lahedowiie), Miss L. Davie (Mona), Mullitte, . carrow.) " : ' Granits were authorised for the following schools Mangamaire,- Man—gaone, Brooldyni, Wadestown, .Worser Bay/.. Taiuiherenikau, Papawai, iNewtown and Masterton. Library**" subsidies were made to Reikiorangi (£1) •Wonser Bay (£5), Martinhorough (£l> and (MauriceviHe West £1 ss).- v TENDERS. .":; Tenders were accepted'as follows; Greytowni (fireplaces), J. ' The chairman; submitted 'his annual report, .which was formally, received. It .stated, that tihore was a credit Balance of £3588 18s M. Technical education pupils in' all subjects of. iristruc-. idon tot^lc<ri9 s ß9S. .Capitation was earned by. schools in. 1911, comp'ared with 1-18 in .-1910. Ten .'• claims for'(Government'subsidy" were received during the year for manual aaid .technical purposes,, and eleven for districts Qiigh- school purposes,. The hoard has aimed at cultivating the artistic taste of (scholars 'by supply of good pictures. A suggestive list "of ibooks suitable> for school libraries has 'been issued, and many committees and teachers have availed .themselves of the eubeidics offered. The- total number of teachers, pupil teachers and probationers in th.fr ihoard's service at the end of the year 339 women. Adult 'teachers totalled 415, and pupil teachers 63. -Satisfaction ie expressed at improved attendance by school children, t*ho year's percentage being 90.1 against 89.6 in 1909, and 88.9 in 1910. The magistracy has made the way. of the--4ra'negre'is.sic-r increasingly hard. The system of periodic report of ahsenteetf, transfea'fl. and withdrawals is now so nearly complete as to enable the board to pursue any parent who seeks to evade the law. (Now school buildings- lvcre erected from grants at Waichanga, Lower 'Hutt (infant departmant), Carrington. aaid Nbrmandale. A new school to replace that destroyed by fire at Pa<hiatua has been completed. It has beert the endeavour of the board to add as far' as possible to the comfort ,of country rteachew ,and the board urges that more money should' be provided- for this purpose. Tt hopes t« ibe in a position to begin shortly the erection of the school and college at Kelburne.
