Tho leading .stokers on the Titanic staio that iJie bulkhead doors were wooden, and opened once to admit 3lr Shepherd, the Engiiieetr, who broke his leg itihrough falling dowji a maiiliole. Four* stokeholds remained dry, and the work in the engine room was continued .till' 2 o'clock. Tliir.ty-.six fires were drawn before tho end. One gineer shouted to the stokers, "You have done your best; get on deck." The last stoker, on looking hack, saw the floor of the engine i-oom .break. A great hole appeared, and the engineeir fll through tlie bottom of <the vessel.
