A MISSING DREDGE

ALARM IN CHRISTCKXRCFI.

SYDNEY, April 29. . The cruiser Challenger has left to search for tho dredgo Manchester.

CHRISTCHUROH, Last Night

The long voyage of the dredge Manchester, which left Lyttelton;' on April 4th, for Sydney, has caused'no very marked anxiety in Lyttelton until the last 'last few days, but shipping people frankly admit that they aro now genuinely alarmed. The Manchester is a hopper dredge of 833 tons, with a twin screw. She was sold to the Sydney Harbour Trust rcemtly by the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and a representative of the Trust supervised the fitting of tho vessel before her departure, and Mr J. Sidall, chief engineer of the vessel, is a member of the Sydney Trust staff.

Many of the officers and crew belong to Christchurch and Lyttelton. Mr J. Downie, the master, was in the shore employ of the Union Company at Lyttelton. The chief mate is Mr L. Sclniltz, who was lately on the small packet steamer John.

Other members of the staff and crew are :—Second mate, A. Baxter; second engineer, H. J. Avers; third engineer, J. \V. Crombie; A.B.'s, T. Dally, I). Dodgers. G. Easson, P. Prophet, O. August in and S. W. Christie; ordinary seamen, S. J. Gilray and S. Anderson;' greasers, J. White', A. Bluudell, and 11. W. Aldridge; firemen, H. O'Neill, J. Galbraith, E. Pitts, C. McDermot, and K. Lambert; steward, J. McQueen ; cook, It. Wallace. Mrs Sidall, wife of th« chief engineer accompanies her husband, having signed on as a stewardess. "An Auckland wire states that H.M.S. Encounter and H.M.S. Pioneer leave to-night to assist in tho search for the missing dredge, which is about a fortnight overdue from Wellington to Sydney.
