THE ESCAPED PRISONER
STILL AT LARGE. (By Telegraph — Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The prisoner John Lewis, who escaped from custody wMe at work in the prison brick-yards yesterday, is still at liberty. When the scaled the wall Eiurrt>unding the yard 3ie was filed at by a warder, .but the aim was defective, and Lewes managed to get away. It is stated that the prisoner : dreaded going back to New Plymouth, and that his conduct since his release by the Prison Board had prejudiced the chances of the other men who are confined tfiere as ."ha'bituals." It is further suggested that these ■men would have visited ttheir displeasmre on him on the grounds" that he 'had prejudiced their chances of liberation .; Lewis made ; llus escape with the •aid of a plank placed against a corrugated iron wait surrounding the grounds. It is reported that 'lievwas. seen in Fintay Terrace after he escaped, but so .far all efforts to re-cap-ture him Juave failed. Several policemeu and probationers, artillerymen, and others, aire out searching to-day.
