MAYORAL FUNCTIONS.
Some people have an idea iiliat tho sole functions of ithe Mayor of a township are to preside at Council meetings, 'keep obsrtrojperous Councillors in order, and take- the chair for everybody who comes' along, excepting ithose who do not suit. Needless to say, there are other duties which a Mayor anight reasonably be expected to perform. Had Master ton, for instance, possessed a 'live Mayor during the last year' or two, the Borough. Oounicil would have backed up the efforts or" the Chamber of Commerce in regard to railway .matters. It would ihave pressed the claims of the district in respect to the opening up of the Ibackibfifocks. It would luive done everything in its power to advertise the attractions 'and resources' of ■ iJi-o' pJace.'Bait mfofcit 'has it done? It has tarred and asphalted a few chains of footpaths, erected: a white elephant in the Park, bungled the northern approach .business, and increased the honorarium of the Mayor !• ; ''
