The hockey season was opened at Lansdowne yesterday with a. series of i practice amtches. The grounds were | overgrown with tuditis of grass, but I were .otherwise satietfaotoiy. A number ,df spectators were present. The most inifceresiting game of the day was ,that trtween .Excelsior and St. Matthew'is seniors. The teams did not lhave their full strength, several good players .being 'absent from both sides. The first half was a keen tussle, and some excellent- hockey was witnessed, the spell ending with- one goal each. The final was not iSo faiat, the pjayers perceptif>Ty tiring. The result was a well earned victory for Excelsior by itihree goals to two. For the winners G. Barr, A. Williams and J. Dunn scored, and E. Douglas, 'scored both goals for ,the losor-s. A junior match w'as also played between -/Excelsior- and St. Matthew'«. A number of new players took part in the gjaeme, and junior hockey will benefit accordingly. The St. Matthew'.s junior® iron iby four goals to three after a .very even game, in .which neither iteami bad any great- advantage. Cooper, a newcomer, hit three goals, and McGregor bit one, for the winners; <and Ward, Tait and Morns .scored one. goal each for the losers. The Maisterton- Ladies' Hockey Club also beld a practice, and showed good form, considering the short .time since the Club wais formed. This- team, if it continue® practice in combination, ishouid be a formidable wval to the 'Greytbwn champions.-
