SPORTING NOTES

(By "Also Started.")

KIXTTJRES

April 17 and 20.—Wellington R. 0. Autumn. April 24 and 25.—Man.iwa.tu R. 0. Autunnn. April 24 and 27. Avondale J.C. Autumn. April 24 and 23. South Canterbury J.C. Autumn. May 1 iand 2. —Marlborough R.O. Autumn. May 1 'and 2.—H/awke's Bay J.C. Autumn.

•The Wellington (Racing Club's autumn meeting opens to-day at Trentham, and with the rain, which has fallen during last night and this morning, the tracks will have the sting out of them, which will be appreciated by owners wh::se horses have had a lot of racing during the season.

Since the coining 'on of rain, and the probability of soft tracks, several horses which have a partiality for soft [going, have come into favour for several of the events, to be decided this afternoon. Nota»bly amongst- these are Undecided and Kbaimsin, who have shown that they are at home when tihere is any mud-larking to be done.

W r . Davies' filly has been doing great work on the tracks at Trenitham, and is euro to be one of the heavily backed division in the Thompson: Haiidica-o.

Undecided has on several occasions demonstrated that he can gallop with freedomi on heavy courses, and with the services of Hatch, should give a good account of himself in .to-day's big handicap.

Tlie locally owned Sir Knox, and Sir Solo will do .battle for the Wairarana, and there are not a few who expect to gee .the former run a good race. He is also engaged in the St. Leger, and with'(Byron look like the only horses thai have a chance of making a race of it with the elect of Sir George Clifford's stable.

■C. Jenkins will vide Sir Knox/in his Trentham engagements.

Byron is one of the latest horses to come into favour .for the Thompson. He will be ridden by C. Price, and on his running in the Great Easter imu.st have an undoubted chance. The only races which Byron has won were on the Trentham (tracks, and the old. saying of "horses of courses" may be worth bearing in mind. •Los Angeles and Bandiera still maintain their position as favourites for the Thompson and Railway Handicaps respectively. Those who-saw 'Bandiera racing at Riccarton won't hear of hj;& defeat, but with the altered conditions, it is possible that some of tho lighter • weighted division may trouble the favourites. , -.

Lord Renown has heen scratched for his- first day's engagement at Trentham. ■ ' -

Trainers and owners are loud in rtheir praises of the .tracks at Trentfliam, -and the opinion, is freely expressed that there is nothing to equal fthem in the Dominion. This must be very gratifying to the Wellington Club, especially since it is only a few years since Trenthara. migfht bo termed a howling desert, and is also an example of what a progressive and energetic Club may accomplish. .B. Deeiey, the crack . Auckland horseman, will have the mount on Dearest in the Thompson Handicap "to-day, and O. Emmerson will ride ■Gipsy Belle, the Poriraa stable deciding ,to (star* both in the mile race. Masterton sports will travel to Trentham by train, whicli leaves Masterton at 8.30, arriving at Trentham at 11.54. The return train, will leave Trentham at 5.25, and connect with' the Masterton train at the Upper Htitt.

. The following are the probable starters aiid riders in the Thompson Handicap to-day:— Los Angelos 9.11 (W. Young). Undecided 9.3 (». Baton). Boanerges- 8.8 (A. Oliver). Dearest 8.6 (B. Deeley). Byron 8.5 (C. arice). , Gipsy Belle 8.4 (U. Emimerson). ... Midnight Sun 8.3 (E. Lowe). Sir Knox 7.13 .(C. Jenkins). \ Effort, 7,11 ($. Ryan).. Sea Queen 7.11 (W. Pricie). Khamsin, 7.7 (H.
