MAURIGKVILLE WEST.

The daily milk supply at the Company's factory !ha,s lowered to i)0(* gallons, This compares favourably with other years. The tests rim between 4.3 and 5.1, while the grading at the stores maintains a creditable standard. The wot wason seems to have been in favour of dairying hero this year. Judging by accounts, there will bo more than usual interest taken, m the School Committee election, to take place on the 22nd. It is to bo hoped a good number of householders will turn up to exercise their powers in (this important business. School matters havo not been taken up keenly by residents hero in the past. Through the Easter holidays, many motorists mistook the road and journeyed over the WevS,t Hill. The heaviest flood ekperienced here for sometime took place last Tuesday. The peaceful little Makakahi River was converted into a raging torrent, and flooded the low-lying land in its basin. The most serious damage -reported was the washing away of two tramway bridges belonging to the local sawmill". These will take some- time to replace, consequently their destruction will cause considerable loss and inconvenience to the owners of Ithe mill. The course of the Ruamahunga River near the .Mt. Bruce bridge has changed considerably, and the main stream is now flowing straight against the hank on which tho southern end the bridge rests,. Fo'^ u ' na . te ly this bank of solid rock, so the foundfdion, of the bridge is not likely to be seriously damaged by future floods. Tlie Ruamahunga at this spot ■affords, a splendid example of the erosive work ciairried on :by running streams', aud tho scenery in the vicinity is wildly-picturesque, especially in, tlie winter, when the 's2CW-fflad. lararuas make an effective for the'forest-covered ranges through which the river foams and flows. As evidencing the lateness of the •season, the native plant, houhero, which usually flowers at the end of February,- is now in fuM bloom. Farmers state that grass is more plentiful for the time of. the year than it lias been for several seasons back, and, as animals are in good condition, they arc hopeful that their . tocKS will winter well. Miss Lozell has just returned from a short holiday, spent in Hastings. Miss Harvey returned on Saturday from a lioliday spent with friends in Hawke's Bay. Mr J". Dick is spending his furlougn at Waiirui.
