PASSENGERS RESCUED

CREW FIGHTING THE FLAMES

NEW YORK, April 9. The steamer Ontario, belonging to tho (Merchants and Miners' Transportation Company, is in flames off the harbour. " The passengers have been rescued. The steamer's crew is fighting ihe flames with little success. The cargo of cotton has -been jettisoned. The captain ran the vessel ashore when tho fire started. (The Ontario, built in 1904, is a steel screw steamer of 3082 tons gross. Her'dimensions ar.e; Length 292 ft 2in ; breadth, 42ft 2in; depth" 15ft 9in.)
