I WIN FOR OXFORD • BY EIGHT LENGTHS. (Received April 2, 8 a.m.) LONDON, April 1. The University boat race Oxford v. Cambridge was re-rowed to-day over the Putney to Mortlako course, a distance of four and a quarter aniles. On Saturday last, when the crews met, the weather was very bad, and both boats were swamped. Oxford finished the course, but owing to the fact that at Chiswick others than members of the crew helped to bail out the Dark Blue boat the race was ordered to be re-rowed. ' To-day, when the crews went to the starting point a strong north-westerly wind was blowing, which made the i water choppy. The Iboats had seveninch splash boards; and bladders were carried under the seats. " The Cambridge men were quicker than their opponents at the start, but the boats were level when a half mile had been covered. Then there was a heavy hailstorm. At three-quarters of a mile, Oxford went to the front, and steadily drew ahead, leading by two lengths at Hammersmith Bridge. The Dark Blue's took Cambridge's water half a mile further on, and thenceforth the race was a procession, despite Cambridge's phicky spurts. Oxford won by eight lengths, tho time being 22min osec.
