STAGPOOLE CASE
ALLEGED LIBEL.
(By Telegraph—fress Association.) ' PALMERSTON N., Last NigM. Mr C. A. Loughnan yesterday issued a writ for £IOOO damages for ;aMeged libel on behalf of Mr Thomas .Stagpoole, against- Frederick Pirani, 'journalist, and Frederick Pirani and 00. Ltd., proprietors c-f' the fleik'tnfi Evening Star. The alleged' libels are contained in the Star of Monday, March 18th, in which a heading to a report of the conclusion of the Stagpoole case read:— "A fraudulent return sent in by Mr Stagpoole." An editorial, was prefaced by a statemenit by Mr Pi-rani that Mr Stagpoole w't i !d be debarred from holding any position as a teacher, and would find it impossible to obtain any position of trust. Also in the report already reiferred to, Mr Pirani is reported a« saying thtit 'the Board had been defrauded. All these matters and the articles referred to form the subject of the action.
