LABOUR AND TAXATION.
Speaking at a meeting of the Women's Liberal Association at Sydney last week, Mr W. E. Johnson, M.11.J1., said the oppressiveness of Labour government had been felt'by every "section of. 'the. 'camnniitity, arid its taxation was the heaviest ever experienced iVthis' country., This year '.the Stale taxation.had been increased by over 100 per'cent. Taking the average, family of five persons—under itlhe previous Liberal Government the taxation was £2 15s per family. Thiia year it is increased to £5 15s, an. increase of £3 per family. In the first years of Federation the Common■wpalfch taxation per fa-mily of five wa»£ll .12b Od. To-day it is £l6 'l3b •Id, an increase of £5 Cs lOd. The combined Commonwealth and State taxation per family of five to-day was the staggering total of £22 8s 4d, and much, of this taxation was. quite unnecessary. Yet still more taxation was promised. When people in highly prosperous times were complaining of the financial strain upon their earnings, how much more will they feel tiho strain in the coining time of adversity? This took no jtcoount of municipal, shire, and water and sewerage: rates.
