CAPETOWN, March 27

Major Silbuni's motion in favour of a contribution to the British Navy, calculated on the value of South Africa's seaborne trade, 'has been rejected by 56 votes to 35. •

The Ho,n. T. Smartt suggested .a contribution of £500;000 annually.

Mr Smuts stated that the Defence Bill Cost £T;172,000, being £320,000 more than was previously estimated. The time, he said, was not ripe for arriving at a definite conclusion in regard to the Union's contribution to the Navy.
