NORTHERN APPROACH

DISCUSSION AT BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. At last ncght's special meeting of the Masterton borough Council, the question of tho northern approach came up for discussion. His Worship the Mayor stated that so far matters in connection with the northern approach contract were anything but satisfactory, and the Council should decide what steps should be taken to bring the work to completion. A good deal of comimuniojitiion had been received from the, County Council in ..reference- to the contract, and tihe position, now was, that tho Borough Council was liable, according to the Governor's Warrant, for half tbe cost entailed m work connected with the northern a,proach, which was not in. keeping with the resolution passed by the Borough Council, which sitated that the Council was to stand half, the cost of the, work up to £3150.

v'r Ew-ington .stated that he. understood that "was the' come : to:with'the Gpuhty;Council. '; ; i: .'were now liable up to any amount j.and. hei that the best;.way difficuity was fw the' Council to arrange for the' terminating of the Governor's Wiaau-ant as soon as possible," and any further work to be (lone could be completed under new arrangemenrtiS'.

.Or Temple wanted to know who was responsible for the forwarding of the Cbuh&l's. resolution to the County Council. (The Mayor explained that the resolution was ga-jsetted, and anyone having objections to the resolution could do so.

Or Temple thought that the resolution, as gazetted, -should have been j placed befbre the Council, as every Councillor did not get the Gazette.. The Mayor • explained that the Cmvnty Council, . Borough Council, and Enganee.rfi were of the opinion that the estimated cost was sufficient to cover all the expenses of the contract, and that as such was not the case, the best course to be adopted would be- to arrange that a committee from the Council wait on the County Cbuncil, and ascertain actly the 'liability of the Cic-ivncil, and to have the Governor's ' Warrant terminated ■as> soon as possible.

Or Hoar moved that a committee consisting of the Mayor and Town Clerk.be appointed tio meet the County Council, and come to a full understanding of the Borough'© obligations, •and to terminate the Governor's Wa.rnant, provided a sufficient sum be provided for the completion of the work of the Council on the northern approach. .The motion was seconded by Or Temple, and was carried.
