A PLEASANT FUNCTION

Miss o'Leary honoured. A very pleasant function took place at the Masterton District High School yesterday afternoon, when the High. School girls gave an afternoon tea in honour of Miss Annie O'Leary, first champion lady swimmer of New Zealand, and a former Hish School: girl. M r W. H. Jackson was chairman, and amongjst the guests were Mr A. W. Hogg, of the 'Wellington Education Board, Mr R. Brown (chairman), and Messrs J. T. Thompson, E. H. AV'addington and E. Pragnell, of the Masterton School Committee; Mrs P. ■R. Cook, president of the Ladies ? Swimming Club, and Mrs J. W. Blackman, vice-president of the club. A number of the old High School girls and members of the teaching staff were also present. JClxe tea tfeok place in th© cookery room, which was tastefully decorated. A centre table was loaded with the trophies and presentations which were won by and presented to Miss O'Leary, and which were examined and much" admired by those present. Speeches were made by Messrs WH. Jackson, R. Brown, A. W. Hogg, E. H. Waddington, J. T. Thompson, and E. Pragnell, testifying to _ the pleasure it gave them to participate in a function of such general interest.

During the afternoon recitations were given by -Miss Dorothy Vile and Miss Hogg. The visitors were royally entertained at the tea, the tables being laden wjth. delicacies and *ruit of every description. The toast of the guest- of the afternoon was Droposed in a felicitous speech by Mr A. W. Hogg, and greeted with acclamation. Mr Jackson, on behalf of Miss O'Leary, suitably responded. .1 Mrs P. R. Cook, on behalf of the Ladies' Swimming Club, of which Miss O'Leary was a member, thanked the High School Girls and all concein-* <?d for the splendid nyumer in which ■they had honoured the lady champion.
