ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT

McP.FIEPSON'S CONFESSION

(Received Last Night, 9.15 o'clock.)

SYDNEY, March 21

In the Singer conspiracy case. Brown and McPherson have reserved their defence, and have been committed for trial, bail not being asked for. Brown, who was further charged with the larceny of £lO, has been remanded for two months.

McPherson was then charged with .stealing three sums of £l2 10s each. The acting-manager produced a writ- [ ten confession, in the course of which McPherson stated that ever since he held the present position he had been tampering with the Company's moneys. His defalcations amount to about £6OOO. He would take the money and alter the cashbook in different ways in order to balance the accounts. Ho suggested getting Mr Lough from Christcliurch over to straighten the cashbooks, as he was the only officer in the Company with sufficient experience. He supposed it was the old story of hoping to make good the shortage, but getting deeper into tin? . mire. The general manager had warned him against races, hut then he was in too deep to stop betting.

The branch manager, in giving evidence, said that so far there had been discovered a shortage of £BOO more than the confession showed. McPherson admitted that the confession was true, and has been committed for trial.
