Although we cannot commend the Government, 011 the very eve of its retirement, upon the making of important appointments to the Public bei \ - ice, we would bo lacking in candour were we to refrain from expressing the opinion that the appointment of Mr John Storauclion, Surveyor-Gener-al, to the position of Under-Secretary for Lands- in succession to Mr W. C. Kensington, is one which will afford entire satisfaction. Mr Strauehon has been identified with the administration of the Lands Department for many years-, and he possesses a special knowledge of the requirements of the country in ihe way of land settlement. Ho will be of great assistance to the new Minister of Lands, whoever he may be.
