On his departure from Cambridge last week, on his transfer to the stationmastership of FeatEerston, Mr A.: Grow was given a righ royal send off by •the local railway men. Captain Mitchell, for many years Superintendent of the Dunedin City Fire Brigade, has resigned in consequence of failing health.
At the conclusion of the ordinary service at the Masterton Methodist Church last evening, the senior steward (Mr O. Pragnell) briefly mentioned the sad bereavement of the Rev. S. J. Serpell, in the loss of his wife. Mr Pragnell spoke of the excellent qua.lities of the Mo Mrs Serpell, of her special qualification as a minister's -wife, and of the great loss her death .was to Mr Serpell and family, and to ■the church. Mr Pragnell stated that last Sunday evening a friend had called to see Mrs Serpell, and was requested by the late lady to read to her thc.lo7th"Psalm. It was Mr SerpeH's wish that no memorial sen-ice be held, but the speaker said ho would ask tho congregation to stand as a •mark of sympathy; He would then ask •the preacher (Mr L. Minifie) to read the-107th Psalm. At the" conclusion tho organist played "0, Rest in the Lord," the congregation remaining standing with bowed heads.
At the meeting of Directors of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last, tiho President (Mr W. A. McLeod) took occasion to congratulate Mr R. W. Robson, one of the directors, upon his appointment to a responsible) position in Timaru. Mr Robson, he said, had taken a warm interest in the sdi'airs of the Society since coming to Masterton, and had assisted materially in bringing it to its present proud position. Mr J. H. Pauling endorsed theremarks of the President. It was decided that a photographic group of the directors bo taken, and that an enlargement of the same be presented to -Mr Robson. The expressions of "the directors were suitably acknowledged bv Mr Robson. ■ -•
Mr J. H. Rirby, formerly on the staff of the Wairarapa Daily Times, ■has been appointed to a permanent position on the staff of -tho Danhevirko Advocate.
