MASTERTON COUNTY.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report from the engineer (Mr D. McLaohlan) was read at the meeting of the. Mastcrton County council yesterday OPAKI RIDING— Kiriwhaka/papa Road—Con tract No. 265 : 14 chains of formation. The work is near completion. The contractor expects to finish'in eight or ten days' time. Cootes Road. —Contract No. 270: 65 cliains of metalling. The contractors have yet about 15 chains to complete their contract, some difficulty has been experienced in procuring metal of good quality. Repairs have been effected to the watentables on the Black Crock road.
Similar'repairs have been made to the Upper Waingawa Road. The roadman reports in this section that two culverts arc in a dilapidated condition and require mawing. WAINUIORU RIDING.— Masterton-Waimata road. —Taueni to Mangapakcha section. —C-ontract No. 271: Delivering 1770 cubic yards let on I.ltill November, has been carried on in a very dilatory and unsatisfactory manner. The contract timo has now expired, and the greater portion of the contract is yet unfinished. Blairlogie East Coast Road. —Contract No. 272: Delivering 2010 cubic yards of metal. The contractor has still 600 cubic yards of metal to put out between tho roadman's cottage and tho Blairlogie Junction. Uriti Road. —Contract No. 275: 90 chain's of metalling, etc. —The spreader reports that about 12 cliains is laid oh the long haul, in addition to the carting of clay for t'he purpose of improving the grades and making a foundation for a metal layer over some
Homewood-Kaiwhata Road. —I have arranged to have three culverts put in on tho abovo road.-.
Meraiti-Fernyhursfc Road Contract of metal. The above work was started last week, Brancepcth Road. —Contract No. 277: Delivering 1030 cubic yards of metal. —Carting operations were begun last week. West mere Road, —Two shoots bave been put lii to prove lit the l>ye washes cutting into tho road reserve.
Letts Road. —In connection with tho £SO Govt. Grant available for the above road, I have-taken levels from the Taueru bridge to tille top of the terrace, covering a length of 19 chains —a grade of linls is obtainable from filling to top of terrace. The cost of constructing the whole length to a 15-feet roadway wonkl amount approximately to £l5O. UPPER TAUERU RIDING Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road. —Contract No. 268: Building additions to roadman's cottage. Tho above work has beon completed. Deviation and extension to the Wainui-o-mapo Road. —(Govt. Gt. and Loan). I have made the necessary engineering survey for the formation of a mile of above road and the plans are in course of preparation. ALFREDTON RIDING.— A 1 f red ton-W ebe r Road. —Go ntra e t No. 269: Delivering 940 cubic yards of 'metal. —Steady progress lias been made' with the above contract; there are yet some 300 cubic yards of metal to deliver. Boustead's to Tiraumca section.— Contract No. 270: Delivering 1450 cubic yards of metal. "Slow" progress has been made ' with .the above contract, the contractor < being late on tho ground and lie has since encountered freshes in the river which have covered the metal .supplies. Alfredton-Tinui Road. Contract No. 264: 54 chains of formation and culverts. The contractor reports the work finished and ready for final inspection. Saunder's Road Extension (Govt. Gt.) 1 have commenced a, survey of a portion of tho .above road from the Southern end. I am informed by the Department that the grant is availbalo for bridle track or dray formation. Hutcwai Road (free grant).—Specifications have been approved for 23 chains, rtioro or less, of metalling, to start from the junction, of the .main road.
