Mr James Col way has returned to Masterton from .a very interesting tour of the Auckland Province.

Mr "Joe" Brown, a well-known Masterton native, underwent a rather serious operation in the local' hospital on Monday, but is making satisfactory progress towards recovery.

Mr G. H. Harden, Palmerston North manager erf the Bank of New South Wales, has been transferred to the Wanganui branch of the bank.

The Hon. A. T.' Ngata met with an accident a few days'ago which wil 1 . necessitate his remaining in bed for some 4ays.

Mr G. R. Sykes, MP., has been ■elected an honorary member of the Masterton Fire Brigade.

'Hie Rev. S. J. Serpell, of Masterton, has been elected Chairman of the "Wellington District Synod of the Methodist Church. Messrs W. T. Grundy and H. G. Cousins have been elected members of the Teachers' Superannuation Board 'for the North Island, and Messrs W. \ Davidson and J. A. Valentine for tho ' South Island. Mr J. R. Cole, of Masterton, has .received notice from the Department for Native Affairs, to the effect that ihe has (passed his examination for a Maori interpreter's; license, of tho first grade. Mr Cole has always taken a keen interest in the Maori tongue, and lias travelled in many parts of New Zealand, visiting many remote places peopled only by tho natives. Mr W. F. Harrison, of Wellington, has been appointed manager of the , furnishing department of tlie Masterton branch of the W.F.C.A. Mr Harrison, previous to receiving tho present appointment, was with Messrs Jan. Smith and Co., of Wellington, and has had a wide experience of the business, both m England and t<he colonies. Mr Harrison gained his experienca of tlie trade with his father, who has for many years past carried on a large manufacturing furniture business .in Huddersfield,. Yorkshire.

Another of the _ pioneer settlers of flbhe Dominion, Mr David Gordon, of Makauri, near Gisborne, died on WeoiK<sday, aged 70 years.
