CLAIM FOR DAMAGES.
j AG AINST A NEWSPAPER, i (By Telegraph—Tress Association.) | NAPIER, Last Night. A case which is arousing considerable local interest is 'being Qieard in the Supreme Court to-day. H. Lan Simson, candidate for the Hawkc's Bay seat at tilio general election, is suing the Tribune, a Hastings 'publication, i'or alleged libel in publishing the following : "Flash from tlio candidate's speech, when referring to anotliei' candidate: 'This person (meaning plaintiff) comes among you clothed with the Government ibrand. If no had his deserts, lie should have received it before now.' " Plaintiff claims £2OOO damages. The defence denies that the words were published maliciously or falsely, or that the words meant that plaintiff had been guilty of a criminal offence for which lie was liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment, and that lie was unfit to represent the electors in Parliament; but if it is prowl that the words are cei'amatory, that the ccfendant Company says that they are in sense alleged true, and will bring evidence to prove that plaintiff was ! twice convicted of assault. Mr B. J. Dolan is appearing for plaintiff, and Mr C. P. Skerrett, K.C., for defendant.
