THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
Masterton is to be congratulated upon its excellent show of products of the, farm, garden and orchard, and of the splendid specimens of home woik that were on exhibition. The most impressive feature of the Show was no doubt the score or so of table centre decorations. It must be confessed that there was noticeable about them a striking similarity in design and arrangement, and although individually each exhibit was worthy of a prize, when looked at as a whole there was a decided absence of novelty in the class. Fortunately for Masteiton, we have a live Committee to look after the interests of the shows. They arranged for the exhibitors a demonstration in the Hall of the'present fashion of'decorating tables at larger functions than we are- familiar with locally. The work was kindly undertak-en-by Miss Prebble( Wellington)before quite a large number of. interested spectators. It is to be hoped that tho object for which the exhibition was designed—the raising of the-standard' of work at future'phows—will be realised. A' practical Jesson of the sort given is worth more than all that can be written on the subject. Judging by the interest on the part of the spectators, the innovation was decidedly a 'success, and it opens up a question as..to whether an hour's lecture to exhibitors on show days, to cover other classes of exhibits, could not be arranged. Whilst the judging is in full progress, there is a ?all in the day's programme, and exhibitors, especially those from a distance, are generally thrown on their own resources to fill in the time until the doors are thrown, open to the public. An hour might well be devoted to instruction on show, matters.
