HOME FOR INCURABLES.
At no<?n to-day, representatives from public bodies in the Wairarapa will assemble at the County Offices, Master ton/ to discuss some form of public recognition of the generous act of one of our oldest and most r fpected Wairarapa settlers. For many yearspast there has been no provision in our local hospitals for chronic cases of diseas?, and the local Hospital and Charitable Aid 'Board has bsen put ix>< considerable expense in paying _ for the maintenance of incurable patients in suitable homes, either belonging to the Government or under the management- of Hospital Boards in other districts. lii addition to this, beds in the various, local hospitals have been, and even now are, occupied by chronic cases to the exclusion of bona fide hospital cases, that is, easc-s capable of benefitting from the treatment received. To'such aa extent was this the case that the matter had become a pressing one for the Hospital Board, which would in the near future have had to. face the necessity of making suitable provision for the requirements of its own chronic and incurable patients. At this stage Mr W .C. Buchanan appeared on the scene, and with characteristic generosity offered to provide a Hospital for Incurables. Needless' -to say,, the local authority accepted the offer in the spirit in which it was given. Tenders were called for the erection of a building, and the hospital has become an established fact. Provision lias been made for. 16 beds for chronic cases, and also four beds for consymptives. The cost will run into something like £SOOO, and the whole of this expense is borne bv Mr Buchanan.
