The serious business at the Trentham meeting, so far as the majority of the competitors are concerned, commenced this morning with the first match of the Championship series. There was a tricky south-east breeze, which upset the calculations of shooters, a-s it carried nasty eddies.
Auckland Match, at 300 and 500 yards, 10 shots, first taken at the 300 yards range:— Elliott (Akarana), a tyro, took little notice of the wind, and put ud the .„possible. .. Duthie (Christchurch) got. 49, and Atkinson. 1 " (Auckland), Needham (Linton), 48 each. There were. 4.7's in plenty. When the men started at,.300 yards, the general shooting conditions had improved, and "4-he marksmen did 1 good work on the. whole. Elliott immediately found the bull's-eye, and put on four consecutively; his next was a 4, and then he got a 5, followed up by a 4 and three bulls. This gave him the remarkable total of 98 in the match, or two off the possible, and secured him certain victory. All interest in the match thereafter dropped away. Mcintosh (Drmedin, City Guards) * scored a possible at this range, and there were three 93's, a, 92, and five 9.l's. After luncheon the Wellington match atj>oo and 600 yards, 10 shotsat each, started, and at the former range, possibles were put on by R. J. King (Onaki) and Potter (Auckland) ; Wilkie and McLachlan (Petone), Hill (Taranaki), and G. Clarke (Rangitikei) each made 49, and there were many 48's. At 600 yards, the fluctuating wind spoilt several promising scores. Potter (Auckland), who made the possible at 500 yards, got 44, which gave him a total of 94. R. J. King only got 39 at 600 yards, 'which put him out of the running. Taylor (Blenheim), who had put up 4.6 at 500 yards, scored two short of the possible here, and beat Potter for first place. Atkinson, by his 93 here, placed himself at the top of the aggregate, scoring 186 to Elliott's 182.
