HORTICULTURAL SHOWS.
Periodical shows of the horticultural and industrial class are of especial in- J terest for their educational value, j Residents who have a taste for gardening receive considerable encouragement from competitions and derive great satisfaction in being able to go just',ohe' better than.-..;fcheir neighbours in some special "line of rare flower, pot plant ',/ fruit or vegetable,, independent of the value of/the prizes that -are to be won. Wellkept cottage gardens add materially to the attractiveness of auy town and in this respect visitors <to Masterton are unanimous in their expressions of appreciation of the attractiveness of the nicely laid out grounds that-bor-der our residential thoroughfares. It is due in no small degree to the efforts of the committee of our Horti-' cultural Society that such interest is •shown in gardening in Masterton. The public take a keen intere-st in our flower shows, and freely patronise the exhibitions that are held. The autumn show to be held next Wednesday will be no exception to this rule. The committee have provided an excellent programme and «omo valuable special, prize* ,as well as ordinary prizes, are offered, and there are classes for professional gardeners, amateurs, and schools, so that all may compete. .Given fine weather, the autumn show should be an all round success.
