Miss Ethel Johnson., daughter of Mr Edwin Johnson, of Hogg Crescent, Masterton, who recently underwent an operation, in the Napier Hospital, is reported to 'be progressing favourably, though her condition for some time caused anxiety to her friends. Mr James Ingram, «n old resident of Foxton, died on Monday at the age of soventy-threo years. .Mr A. 0. Sorimgeour, of Masterton, was still in a very, low condition last night. An old settler of Carterton, in the person of Mr Gus. Matheson, diod on Monday at the age of seveuty-se.ven years. Mr J. O. Sutherland, of the Admiral' Hun, Gladstone, who has purchased Mr E. J. Knight's farm at Ka'muitara, will enter into possession this week. Messrs H. H. Beetham. A. P. Whatman, H. Morrison, and W. J. •Welch, of Masterton, have been elected Vice-Presidents of the Wairarapa ißiflo Association.
Dr. Chesson, of the Health. Department, has been on a, visit-to the Wairarapa this week. Miss Thelraa Petersen, the gifted young vocalist of Carterton, writing 'from Auckland to a friend, states that she is giving a concert in the Auckland Town Hall on March 6th.
Mr A. Cowper, of the Masterton Post Office, who is .leaving to-morrow to talve up a, position in. tho Gisborne district, will be presented -this afternoon With a handsome silver cigarette case, from mennbera of the staff. Mr Inder, postmaister, will make the presentation.
Mr R. C O'Connor, the official lecturer of the Government National (Provident Fund, left Masterton yesterday for Hawke'S Bay and theWairarapa..
Mr G. M. Ross, late manager of (the Bank of New Zealand Queaistown, and who is now retired in Melbourne, is on a visit to Masterton. He is staying withjiis son, Mr C. C, Boss, Lans•downe.
At the monthly meeting o St. Matthew's Vestry, held last night, Mr J. JW. Blackman, ClvurclOTarden on-be-half of the Vestry, extended hearty R ood wishes for a pleasant voyage ■Home to the Vicar and Mrs Watson, and for their safe return to the parish benefited by the journey. The Vicar s E. H. Waddington, supported what had been said jby the previous speaker, which the Vestry endorsed by acclamation. The Kcy.ji. Watson,, in reply, said he did not know bow he would feel if he were leaving with no intention of returning. He felt, the wrench in leaving now although it was with the expectation of returning by the end of the year. He thanked the churchwardens and \estrv for their sympathetic help in carrying out the parish work, .and expressed the hope that he would.see the mew church building well on the way ■ffco completion on .his return, in whicn wish the meeting cordially joined.
A large number of Masterton settlers, with wham he was •well acquainted, will regret to hear of-the death at Napier, after -an apoplectic seizure, of Mr W. E. Griffen, formerly a Government land valuer. Mr Griffen will be (remembered as having visited Masterton some months hack in connection with tho shearers' dispute.
Mr E. L. Lees, who for several months last .winter conducted wool classes in connection with the : Mas"terton Technical School, is at present giving instruction in wool-classing to Stock Inspectors at the various central towns in the North Island. This week Mr Lees is engaged in Palmerston North.
A very old resident of Morison's Bush, near Greytown, in the person »of Mr James Tweeddale, has died at tho ago of 84 years.
