BRISBANE STRIKE
JUDGE HI6GINS' JHDGMENT A SCATHING INDICTMENT. " (Received Last Night, 9.20 o'clock.) •MELBOURNE, February 27.
In tho Arbitration Court, Mr Justice Higgins delivered judgment in the , tramway wise. He found that any re--1 gulation, by-Jaw, or order, made by any of the rosjMni.deii.ts, which forbids the tramway employees, when -performing their duties to wear badges, is unreasonable, 'and that the regulation of the Brisbane, and Melbourne tramway companies, foribidding the wearing of' badges was' aui reasonable. He added that th« members of the Tramway Employees Association should bo allowed to wear a 'badge, when- in uniform or when on duty, without interference. He could do nothing regarding the reinstatement of the men dismissed at Brisbane, That was a matter confined to one State. He hoped substantial succesr. wouikl (bo achieved by t-liio Association., which -would allay the embittered feelings and induce the members to let bygones he bygones. In the co-urse of the summing-up, be said that instead of a 'badge being , a cause of quarrelling, it was move likely to conduct to peace. - It. was a -n otesque mistake to suppose that the Unionists were alwayls spoiling for a light with non-Unionists, The forbidding of badges was merely part of a policy of the Companies to suppress Unionism, especially federated Unionism. The creating and fostering of rival unions by ths Brisiband and Melbourne Companies had been tlio cause cf bittern ess. It was monstrous to think that a ; Union shouJd be forbidden to use the badges it favoured; while the companies used every eftort against the Union and favoured the parasitic growth they planted - - and fos'cred.
