Mrs Haftka, a very old and respected settler of Masterton, died peacefully yesterday afternoon at the residence of her son, Mr ,Alex, Haftka.. Deceased, was 74 years of age, leaves one son and two daughters — Mrs Stevens, of Pahiat-ua, and Mrs Grusehaw, of Masterton. Tho funeral will take place ..to-morrow,- leaving St. Patrick's Church at 10 a.m. for Masterton Cemetery. A London cable states that the Duke of Wellington lias sailed on a visit to Australia. Mr Se-bley, a well-known settler of Hawke's Bay, is at present visiting Masterton. Mr A. T. Band, an American Gas Magnate, arrived in Auckland last week-on a combined pleasure and health trip. The Rev. E. F. Garhett, Anglican minister at East Oxford since 1891, died suddenly at a gathering of Baptists on Friday night, after making a speech, states a Christchurch message. Mr John Young, licensee of " the Family Hotel at Lower Hutt, died on Saturday morning. He'had been ail-' ing for some time.
It is reported that Lord Islington is to occupy "Highdeu," the beautiful residence of Mr W. Johnston, at Awahuri, for a term. 'Mrs Johnston intends very shortly making a trip to the Old Country.
At Eketahnna, last week, Mr Clyde V. Bebbington, of Manchester, England, was married to Millie Francis, fifth daughter of Mr and Mrs* Robert Murroll, senr.
Tlie death occurred at Eketahnna on Friday of the wife of. Mr N. W. Leade,of Tent Flat, Tiraumea. The deceased who was fifty-seven years of age, had been ailing for' a considerable time.
Mr H. D. Vavasour, the wellknown Marlborough breeder of Shropshires, who lias come over for the Masterton show, is a guest of Mr W. E. Bid will, of the Lower Valley.
His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington) has intimated his intention of being present at the Masterton show on Wednesday next. His Excellency will be the guest- of Mr W. H. Beetham,
Mr G. R. Sykcs, M.P., came to Masterton on Saturday, but returned to Wellington in the afternoon.
Mr George W. Nicol, formerly of Masterton and Greytown, and now part proprietor of tho Marlborough Press, is spending a few days in this town.
Tho death is announced at Orepuki of Mr Alexander Love, one of tho Gabriel-Gully pioneers. Ho arrived at Port Chalmers in 1861.
