FHITCH-HASTINGS RECITALS. AT THE TOWN HALL. Those who were fortunate enough •to be present at the Tftwn Hall in Masterton last night were afforded a literary treat. Mr Wilson Friteh, who has: a voice of wide range and flexibility, proved himself an elocutionist of no mean ability. His recital of "The Boys," by Oliver Wendell Holmes, was a fine effort, while he put considerable dramatic force into his interpretation of "A Race for Life," and "An Old Sweetheart of Mine." Bracken's "Not Understood" was treated by Mr Friteh in quite a refreshing style, and Walt Whitman's "The Lone Singer" was portrayed in a peculiarly attractive manner. Miss Hastings, who has_ a cultivated voice and pleasant enunciation, was heard to distinct advantage in "Helene Tamre," a highly emotional effort of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. She also gave an effective recital of "Jeun Val Jean," (from Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables.") With Mr Friteh she reproduced "Loce in the Square" (from "Society"), and made a most pleasing Juliet in the great Shakespearian "Balcony Scene," when Mr Friteh showed his mastery of the piece and his fine elocutionary powers as Romeo. To-night will be devoted entirely to Shakesepare, when "Hamlet" will be produced in all its love, pathos and tragedy. This should .enable both Mr Friteh and Miss.Basting's to be heard to the greatest advantage.
