BRISBANE STRIKE
TREMENDOUS CROWDS NO ANNOUNCEMENT. (Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock.) BRISBANE, February 14. The strikers are quiet. Tremendous crowds gathered at the Trades-Hall, but.no announcement was made. The Strike Committee has not yet played their trump card, as promised for Wednesday. The Newcastle Labour Council, having considered the request to join in a general strike, decided that such action would not assist the Brisbane Unions. PROCLAMATION TO BE IGNORED DISTURBANCES TO BE QUELLED MEN RWTURN TO WORK. (Received February It, 11 a.m.) BRISBANE, February 14. In tbe fact of the strong display made*by the police the strikers quietly dispersed to tlheir homes. The following notice Avas posted in the Trades Hall: "In order to foil. •the plans of-those thirsting 'for the blood of the brave men, women and children wlho have engaged in the struggle for freedom, the strike committee requests all our friends to return to their homos." My Coyne .stated that he intended to ignore the Government's proclamation and the strikers would find, a time and place to meet. 'l-he steamer Palmer has arrived and itbe crow have left. The Premier, in an, interview with ithe (Merchants 1 * Association;-.informed thenftlurt there was sufficient flour and other foodstuffs in the city to last some time, and other 'shipments wore coining forward. . The Premier declares that the strike exists only in name and any disturbance of the ordinary conditions will be rigidly qulled till the strike is declared off. The Secretary of the Employers' sociation reports that the men are steadily returning to work, and many firms who started short-handed on Monday are now fully equipped. The sittings of the Full Court wore postponed on Wednesday owing to members of the staff and some counsel acting as special constables. • The strike committee 3ias issued a notice in order to prevent conflict ■with the police that the usual morning meetings will not Ibe held, but i'm T port ant developments will be _ announced at a public meeting to-night. It is rumoured ithat-a- general out of seamen is contemplated in order to paralyse transport. SYDNEY TRANSPORT WORKERS. OPPOSED TO GENERAL STRIKE. (Received Feltfuary 14,11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 14. A meeting of representatives of the transport workers resolved that while they were in sympathy with a union or .group, of .unions confined t<> one industry resisting oppressive', conditions,: they were not in sympathy with'the/ principles of a great strike, becanser'. it was illogical, and:.would injure indiscriminately aiid destroy amicable: relations. . ' It .was 'further resolved that' it would be treated as an offence if any. member ceases work or (boycotts any vessel in sympathy witlh the Brisbane strike. . ; rOOAL FOR BRISBANE. (Received February 14, 11.13 a.m.) NEWCASTLE, February 14. ..The trimmers have decided not to. handle coal destined for Brisbane.
