MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL

■MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mas-' terton County Council was held on Tuesday afternoon, there being present, — Crs. W. J. Welch (chairman), / 1). W. Foreman, J. Miller, A. J. Percy, H. J. Toogood, A. Murray, R. E. R. Beetliam, and C. C. Kebbell. The contractor for the Waipoua bridges (Mr Woolf) advised that he had made a mistake in his first claim «, in regard to.the hardwood used in his contract. Mr George Benton wrote, drawing attention to the pollution of the Te Hoe stream by fiaxmill refuse.— It was decided to refer the matter to the Health Department, with a request that it should take action. tMr Jeremiah Savage directed tho attention of the Council to the condition of Gordon Street, Lansdowne.—* Referred to the Engineer, with power to act. Messrs Donald and Sons wrote, enclosing a covering letter from the ■Sydney firm in reference to the rubber bands supplied for the Lansdowne water supply.— It was decided to get a supply of rubber re-moulded in Sydney, and that the Council send to England for a fresh supply. The Public. Works Department notified that applications for the payment of road grants should be sent in afc once.— The Clerk was authorised to make the necessary application. Tho managers .of the Masterton Technical School invited the Council to send representatives to the annual meeting on February 12th, and to

take part in the election of managers. —lt was decided to thank the managers for their invitation, and to reply that Councillors would attend, if possible.

A letter was read from Mr T. P. Kembie, asking the Council to repair the road leading to his property at Te Rangitumau.— On the motion of Cr Murray, the matter was left with the representative of the Riding, with a recommendation that the request be entertained. Air F. Hillas asked permission to take some limestone side of the Pori Road.— The action, of the engineer in granting the permission asked for was confirmed. Air David Donald requested the Council to effect some repairs on the Pakaraka road.— It was decided, on the motion o.f Cr terry, that the repairs asked For be effected. The managing ratepayers of the Lansdowne water supply intimated that certain work for improving the supply of water to Mr J. F. Mannsell's premises had-been authorised.

The Golden Bay Cement Works Company advised that it Avas prepared to supply cement in any quantity from its Wellington stores. Mr J. W. Carswell, chairman of the Bideford School Committee, asked the Council to metal the cut-ting leading to the Taueru river, so that access might be giVen to the school.— On the motion of Cr Miller, it Avas decided that a voce of £5 be made for the Avork, Avhich he carried outAvhen the Council's cart., are in the district.

Mr l'\ H. Jewitt forwarded a petition re the expenditure of Hutewai road "thirds."— On the motion" of Cr Murray, , it was decided that sufficient ol' the thirds from Puketoi and HnteAvai roads be utilised to effect the repairs to the HnteAvai bridge and culvert, as recommended by the engineer, and that application be made to the Land Board for the necessary consent.

Mr A. J. Rutherford wrote, statjng that he did not think the College Governors would raise further objection to the neAV location of the Flat Bush road. • •

The Public Works.'Department alt- j thorised the expenditure "T>f £250 (£1 for £1) on the Xe Hoe bridge. Alt-, thority was also given for. the expenditure of £ls (unconditional) on the' Uriti-Riversdale road, and £SO (£1 for £1) on the same road. Mi) R. Riddiford forwarded a sum of £33 6s 8d as a contribution towards improving the Riversdale Road. Other settlers forwarded contributions metalling the Uriti Road.— It was decided to thank the settlers for their contributions. The Eketaliuna County. , Council wrote in reference to the expenditure of £ls on thte Eke't ahun.a? Alfred ton road.— Dealt with by the- Finance Committee. Mr W. S. .Short," Assistß'nit*' Under, Secretary of the Rohds Department, forwarded plans of the Spring Hill road, portions of which had; not been 'legalised. A vote of £IOO had been made for the Spring Hill road, but Or Miller objected tfiat "the road referred t-o had nob been surveyed, and any expenditure upon it would "be useless.— It was'decided to recommend that the grant be expended upon the Mungapara road, or allowed to lapse. Mr B. Leathwick, contractor for work on the YVaircre-Glendonald road, wrote complaining of the delay ou the part of the engineer, in inspecting his work, and of the Engineer re-, quiring him to effect improvements before the work was taken overv— A statement vqs,react -from the Engineer in regard to the matter, stating that, he had made no engagement with. Mr Leathwick to meet him on the work after a first engagement, which had been broken by Mr Leathwick. He had been twice to the work, and on both occasions the contractor was absent. He pointed out that Mr Leathwick had transferred one of his contracts, and had failed to-complete the other. He had given Mr Leathwick seven days' notice to complete his contract, failing which the work would be c]one nt.his expense.— It was decided that Mr Leathwiek'n letter be received, and that the matter be left with the*"engineer.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the meeting of the Finance Committee was "read i and adopted. The Treasurer's statement showed a debit' 1 balance Ju- .tliie bank of £290-3 10s. The receipts for the month had amounted to £2533 6s, Sd; Accounts amounting to £2483,,8s 7d were recommended for payment. t It was decided to recommend the Council to acknowledge the receipt of the letter from the Akitio County Council giving notice to determine the agroenlent under which they undertook to make a contribution• towards the upkeep of the Waihoki and AlfredtonAVeber roads. The Committee decided to recommend the Council to adhere to its original resolution, in regard to the expenditure of £Ki on .the Alfredton road. It was decided to recommend the Council to accept the offer made ,bv Mr Donald Eraser to sell about three acres of the Matawaireka Native reserve owned by him for a site for a roadman's; cottage. It was decided that the attention .of the engineer be drawn to the condition of Jackson's Road, and of Clark's bridge.
