THREATENED STRIKE
AT WELLINGTON MEATWORKS. QUESTION OF OVERTIME. (By Ttk<jivi>h—rress Associatwn.J WELLINGTON, Last Night. A" conference took place to-day between .representatives of the.-employ-ees- of the Wellington 'Meat Export and Gear Meat Company and the employm, to consider matters' in dispute. The Hon. C. M. Luke, M.L.C., presided. The 'men are objecting to the hours worked, and seek to minimise thio by insisting that--overtime rates 'should be paid | beyond 'tight hours per day. The' Union directly ■concerned is one that l:.i:g tune into existence since the small trouble among the assistants at the Wellington Meat Export .Company" s yards at Ngahaurangta. Its title' so far is "The Freezing Workers Union." 'Jhe demand* of the men [■•ubmitted to the conference were for eight hours per day, pay for all work outside 'chose hours to be at the rate of time and a half. After a discussion lasting for the ' greater part of the day, the men offered to compromise on time and a quarter for overtime. This was rejected by the Companies' representatives, • and it 'is threatened that a strike will take place at both works to-morrow. About 800 men are affected.
