In a remarkable interview Mr George W. Perkins, ; of New York, who recently resigned his partnership in the J. P. Morgan bankyig in order that lie'might - devote time to. studying .problems of capital and' labour, declarfed the';other day that the American business world is' suffering from a dearth „of men. capable qf earning \saJaries of .£2OOO ..and more. , Mr" Perkins recalled, a statement recently made by Mr Edison, the inventor, that "a New York business man was - looking for a couple of £2OOO a year men the other (lay, and he could not find them. There were plenty of £6OO men, but no .£2OOO men." The explanation offered by Mr Perkins of the scarcity of men armed with the knowledge and ability demanded by £2OOO a year "jobs" was that the machinery of business and industry invented by man lias developed at a pace which has out-distanced the abilities of man to handle it. "Inventions,'! he says/ "have so crowded the commercial arena that man has not been able to oope w'ith them as fast a-e they appear."
