Mr A. T. Lees, wool expert, is at present on ,a visit to Ma&-terton. Mr Jolm Phillips, one of Auckland's best, known pioneer business men, died nit his residence in Auckland last Friday. - • Messrs H. Croad. of Ballanee, and M. Galvin, of Hamua, contemplate paying a visit to the Old Country at an early date. I)r. Bey, of Greytown, wiho has been laid up with sciatica for some time now, is sufficiently recovered to leave on a short holiday for Napier. He will be accompanied by Mrs Bey.' Air John Cress/well, foreman of the Richmond Borough Council, and Mrs Cresswell and family, who are on a four months' tour of the North Island, have been visiting Masterton, and were the guests of Mi's T. Cressweil, s>f Lansdowne. They left for the north yesterday. News has arrived by mail that Mr Rhodes, son of Mr Arthur E. G. Rhodes, wax gas&etted second-lieuten-ant (on probation) in the Grenadier Guards, on December 16th (the Anniversary "Day of Canterbury). He was to join tho second batallion 'at Wtindsor on January Ist. . Under tlie regulations he can, after .eighteen months' service and passing the military examinations, join the regiment permanently.
