THE POSITION QUIET

MILITARY AID REFUSED. ([Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) BRISBANE, Feb. 4. The strike position was quiet yesterday. Many shops,' including butchers', were open, land a brisk trade was done. The meat was taken from the Slaughter-houses io the shops, and sold under police protection. The reply received through the Governor-General to the Government's application for military aid sthtes that while the Commonwealth, Government is prepared to fulfil its obligations to the States if occasion arises', it does not admit the right ,of any to call for assistance under circumstances which should properly be dealt with by the police states that the condition of affairs, in the opinion of the Federal Ministers, does not warrant the request being complied with.
