TRAMWAY STRIKE
A BASIS OF AGREEMENT WORDING OBJECTED TO. (By Telegraph — Press Association.) Last Night. The efforts to settle the tramway strike appear to have failed, !Representatives of he Strike Committee and the City Council conferred all day. The men had submitted an ultimatum demanding (1) The removal of Inspector Fuller fi-oni the i service; (2) An indemnity against legal prosecution for striking; (3) A guarantee against victimisation on resumption of work. ■Claim No. 2 was waived by the striker*' . representatives, and the "others were agreed to by the Council. Thus a basis of settlement was reaohed for consideration of the strikers. • Wlben a meeting of strikers took place to-night, objection was taken to the words "at i&s own request" in the paragraph providing for Inspector Puller's transference to other «ork., These words, it is claimed, Imd been inserted subsequent to -the basis of agreement being approved by .the Strike Committee. In any case tfhe meeting to-night ■refused to agree to a settlement unless the-words ' r At his own request" are deleted.
In the meantime the Council had adjourned till to-morrow.
