The Wellington Garrison Band won the Championship and also the Challenge Shield at toe Pahnerston North Band Contest of 1911. They used Hawkes' Excelsior Sonorous Band Instruments—a complete set. In the first test,piece thifc noted Wellington Band - waft allotted the maximum number of point*, the judge declaring that &£ had never heard such playing, and coainaending in euiogistic terms the tea* and bleed. The Wellington Tramway Band* also us ing a complete set «i Hawkes' Excelsior Sonorous lutwomeait*, woo the B Grade. The judge congratulated this band on, their playing. These two successes in Grade A and Gr-ude B, an such a great occasion, cue worthy wins for Hawkes', whose instruments are pre-eminent all over •the world. Bandsmen! . Throe "right" whales were stranded on the beach at Cape Foul wind on Sunday. They are from 20ft to 30ft in length. The, manutials were evidently driven ashore' by thrashers.

A fly, said to be the Hessian fly, Jias made its appearance iu several crops in the Totara and Kauroo Hi!? districts, Otago. This fly made its appearance in Masterton about' 20 years ago, and did considerable damage to crops, until a' natural enemy was liberated, when the pest" disappeared.
