' \ ft.;/ —- •' A Parliamentary return- which is just to hand makes interesting but somewihat unpleasant reading for the tax-, payer; It gives the average cost of Harbour Board elections for the three years prior to 1910, compared with "that of the latter year. In the Wellington' district the'cost of the. - last election was £IO6B Is lid, while; tile average for the three previous years rwas £127 16s 2d. In Otugo the figures were £630 10s 3d and £l2l lis 2d ; Napier, £2OO 18s and £2l 18b 6d; Lyttelton, £B4l 12s 4d and £B7; Auckland, £662 6s 5d and £54 19&: id.' In all the other districts the diversity in the figures.is pronounced. In fact,' the whole cost to the Dominion of the elections in 1910 was £4726 Is 7d, while the average for the previous three years was only £ll4l Is 2d. It is just a qnestion whether the country is receiving value for the increase of £8585 Is sd. j
