TAX ON PRODUCE.
At the last 'meeting of the Wellington Harbour Boara, it was; decided that, in .■view of the increased' wages to I>e paid to. worKerg, it was necessary to re-impose the special due?* on produce to a-n extent of £7OOO. We have looked in vain through the Wellington papers for a protest against this iniquitous charge'from the country representatives' upon the Board. It must be remembered that, so far as the cfty merchants are concerned, the extra charge matters little, for it is readily passed on to the consumers. The primary producer 'however, is- not so well circumstanced. Ho has nobody to whom lie can pass on the dues. Ho must pay. up and look happy. The country representatives upon the Board should present this aspect of tfie question' in
its strongest light, and see if it is not possible to exempt the primary products from the special taxation which is necessary to appease the appetite of the worker on the wharf.
